Touchwood awarded green status

Hot on the heels of Touchwood Solihull’s International Green Apple Award win in late 2021, the centre is celebrating again after being named as a Green World Ambassador.

Green World Ambassador status is awarded after businesses and organisations “help others to help the environment” by having their award winning papers published in The Green Book, the world’s only annual global work of reference on environmental best practice.

The Green Book CD is distributed free of charge around the world and on the www.thegreenorganisation.info website to enable Governments, businesses, environmental professionals, organisations and universities to follow the lead of Green World Ambassadors.

The centre beat off strong competition from more than 500 other nominations and representatives for their Green Apple Award winning paper and were invited to the Waldorf Hotel on 30th May to collect their award.

Touchwood was recognised for high achievement in a host of sustainable projects including full ISO 14001:2015 & ISO 50001:2018 accreditation as well as reducing CO2 emissions in 2019 and 2020 by 53% and 59% respectively, compared to the baseline output of 2014.

2021 also saw Touchwood named as the first shopping centre in the UK to be awarded a 2-star Fitwel accreditation, additionally achieving the highest Fitwel Healthy Building score of any retail environment globally.

Tony Elvin, general manager at Touchwood and president of the Solihull Chamber, said: “To be recognised in this way is a fantastic achievement and we are especially proud to know that the hard work done here in Solihull can be used to help other sustainable businesses around the world make an impact within their own communities.

“Reducing our impact on the environment is something we are passionate about and we’re constantly looking at developing and implementing new projects to help us achieve this.

“Winning this Green Apple award was a true team effort and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Touchwood for getting behind the initiative and making this win possible but special thanks must also go to our newly promoted property manager Lynsey Riley for leading on this Project.”

The Green Apple Environment Awards, are an annual international campaign run by The Green Organisation to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.
